The event is canceld for this year but we are jointly working with the city to make it happen 2012. No date has been determined.
The City of Springfield Massachusetts is experiencing a rebirth of civic pride and the timing is right to quite literally, drive this movement. With the 375Th birthday of Springfield Massachusetts happening in 2011, I sincerely believe that the timing is right for a re-branding and the only way to do that is by taking bold and unique steps. The Springfield Vintage Grand Prix will be the spark to bring some excitement, pride and a fast moving history lesson to city residents and equally as important, the world.
What many people don’t realize is the importance of Springfield in American history. From the Industrial Revolution to the Springfield Armory, Springfield has been center stage as a contributing member of the new industrialized America. One small but all too important “first” that Springfield can claim is the birth of the first gasoline powered car in North America, The Duryea. In 1895 the first automobile race in the United States was won by the Duryea Brothers. Let’s honor this and many other achievements by organizing and hosting a world class vintage sports car race in the city streets of downtown Springfield. The Springfield Vintage Grand Prix will be a weekend of vintage car racing and festivities that will wind its way through a course that will bring people past our most notable and historic sites.
The Vintage Sports Car Club of America (www.vscca.org) has agreed to participate in the event along with other clubs and organizations. This annual, free to the public charity event will be a great success and the crown jewel of New England events. Other cities will try to replicate this but no other city in this country can recreate our true American story. There’s many Springfield’s’ across the nation but there is only one “City of Firsts”. I believe the time is now to step up and move forward. Attracting race fans from all over the world, this event will be a great economic boost for our local and surrounding community.
